November 2nd is Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Each year in the San Francisco Mission district, there's a wonderful procession to honor our ancestors, remember friends, family and teachers who have died, and to celebrate life. This event is one of the high points of the year for Maracatu Luta, and 2011 was no exception. You can find some videos of us at the Maracatu Luta YouTube playlist.
We generally rehearse most Tuesdays of the year. We'll take a break after the class on December 13th and start up again on January 17th, 2012. Classes are open to all levels. Instruments are provided (although you're welcome to bring your own). We focus on maracatu and other related rhythms from the state of Pernambuco in the northeast of Brazil. Classes are $15 drop-in, $40 for 4 classes (which don't have to be consecutive), although no one is turned away for lack of funds and work-study options are available.
Yes, we've finally entered the modern era. ;) You can now find out more about us at the Maracatu Luta FaceBook page. Please be our friend. ;) Thanks!
